Mid Century sofa / lounge by Tetra Inc, Texas for Magnatex. America c,1960s-70s. Unknown designer. (Rare item, very little known).
Lightweight aluminium tubular frame with three joined cushions. (14.7 KG) New mixed heavy weave red upholstery fabric with deep pulled through buttoning.
Dimensions- 1,700 L X 730 h x 730 d mm 540 d x 430 h mm (internal seat).
Design/ origin- Extremely rare and impressive piece of furniture design by Tetra Inc/ Magnatex. Very little known/ or recorded about the company. A few examples can be found on the web. These were originally designed for outdoor/ pool side use. Made of weather resistant materials. None ferrous metal (aluminium) and original fabric cover was a water-proof yellow vinyl. Design resembles that of Warren Mcarthur, Industrial/ Deco, tubular construction, form follows function.
Being made of aluminium tubing, this sofa is extremely lightweight. The entire sofa can be broken down into individual parts; Tubes, plastic links, cushions and seat brace. Last image is a example from another seller in Limburg. (www.retrospect.eu/)
Condition- Newly reupholstered in a thick mixed weave red, with highlights of orange/ brown/ beige. New buttoning, using a large black vintage style button. New rear and base construction made from quality black vinyl. The aluminium frame has some spots and areas of corrosion. Some scratches throughout, mainly on arms as pictured. Plastic joining parts also have discolouration and surface corrosion, but all hold strong and function.
